City of Fitchburg 2020 ‘Rain Barrel Program’ Update

Fitchburg, Mass. The City’s DPW Wastewater Division, DPW Engineering Division, and Conservation Commission, in collaboration with Rain Barrels Program vendor, The Great American Rain Barrel (TGARB) Company, of Hyde Park, MA, have decided to adjust the City of Fitchburg 2020 Rain Barrels Program dates, to extend the ordering deadline date for interested residents to place orders for rain barrels, and the pickup event date for Program purchasers to collect their rain barrels.

Fitchburg DPW Wastewater Deputy Commissioner Jeff Murawski stated: “In light of Mayor Stephen L. DiNatale’s City Executive Order and Governor Baker’s State-wide Executive Order extending the essential services emergency order and the Stay At Home Advisory to May 18th, 2020, the City Departments Rain Barrels Program partners decided, in the safety interests of both rain barrels purchasers and distribution volunteers, that it would be prudent, responsible and appropriate to push back both the ordering deadline date and the rain barrels distribution event.”

According to Mr. Murawski, the 2020 Program ordering deadline will now be June 21st, and the barrels distribution pick-up event will be held on Saturday – June 27th, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. As originally planned, the distribution pick-up event will be held at the City’s Westerly Wastewater Treatment Facility (#230 Princeton Road, Fitchburg, MA).

Program vendor, TGARB indicates that incentive-priced 60-gallon rain barrels are still available to Fitchburg residents, at the $30/each (plus tax) purchase price. After the first 130 incentive-priced rain barrels, rain barrels may still be purchased at the discounted purchase price of $64, for unpainted (black, matte gray, or terra cotta colors) and painted rain barrels (forest green, earth brown, or Nantucket gray paint colors).

Discounted purchases (at $30/each) will be limited to one per Fitchburg household. Fitchburg homeowners wanting more barrels can purchase additional barrels at the regular program prices. Non-residents may also participate in Fitchburg’s ‘Rain Barrel Program’, but will not be eligible for the $30 discounted purchase price. Non-residents may purchase the rain barrels at the above listed $64 program purchase price.

At the June 27th distribution event, Mr. Murawski asks that rain barrel purchasers and distribution volunteers wear face coverings, and practice patient, respectful social distancing, for the health and safety for all.

As an added protective practice, distribution event volunteers kindly ask that purchasers remain within their vehicles, and:

  • allow volunteers to communicate purchase order information from safe social distances; and
  • allow volunteers to take care of vehicle loading of the purchased rain barrels.

Orders for rain barrels must be placed by June 21st, 2020. To see a complete list of products, please contact The Great American Rain Barrel Company
